Spotlight: GEEO

Spotlight: GEEO

For the month of May, we are delighted to introduce you to GEEO! GEEO provides opportunities for educators to travel and gain fresh experience abroad and then bring those experiences back to their classrooms. Check out their website, Facebook and Twitter for more info!

What is GEEO’s mission?

Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting as many teachers as possible to travel abroad and then share their experiences with their students upon their return to the classroom. We believe that by spending time abroad, forming international relationships and exploring overseas environments, teachers gain fresh perspectives that deeply enrich their students’ learning and global awareness.

How does it work? Who should get involved?

GEEO runs professional development travel programs specifically designed for educators. For the summer of 2013, we have 20 different programs traveling all over the world including India, Nepal, China, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Peru, Southern Africa, a journey on the Trans-Mongolian Railway, and a program to the Galapagos Islands (and many more!).

A program will consist of up of 6 to 16 teachers from around the United States (and sometimes other parts of the world). Programs follow a set itinerary which allows teachers to visit and learn about the important cultural and historical sites of the country as well as giving them time to explore on their own and create their own adventure. Each program will include 1 to 3 school visits depending on the school calendar of the country being visited.

To travel on a GEEO program, teachers can simply sign up on our website, www.geeo.org or teachers can call us toll free on 1-877-600-0105. Program availability is at a first-come-first-served basis and registrations for programs for the summer of 2013 close on June 1, 2013.

What makes GEEO stand out?

GEEO is unique in many ways.  Firstly, our focus is on teachers. Many organizations focus on student travel. GEEO is dedicated to helping teachers enrich their lives and their instruction by making travel easy, affordable and professionally rewarding. Teachers earn professional development credit while traveling with GEEO and teachers also have the option to pursue graduate credits. GEEO also helps teachers to share their experiences with their students when they return to the classroom by providing educational materials and resources.

How can I get involved if I’m not a teacher?

You probably have a teacher in your life: a friend, family member, spouse or parent – get them to travel with GEEO! GEEO participants can bring along one non-educator guest with them on their travels.

Traveling to the Philippines at just 8 months old, Shawna grew up loving all things related to travel and serving abroad. She is passionate about helping others travel safely and make the most of their time abroad.
